Parents
Charles S Hayes' parents were Sallie Elizabeth Whelan Hayes (1897-1985) and William Henry Hayes (1892-19693); who were married on November 26, 1916. They were buried at Saint Mary of the Springs Catholic Cemetery in Raytown. Madison County, MS. William was a farmer who was employed in the agriculture business. Charles had an Uncle on his mother’s side named P.J Whelan. Both Kitty and Billie, two of Charles’s siblings, would stay with this uncle in 1937 while attending school.
Sibilings
Hayes had nine siblings these include: Kitty Mae Hayes (1920-2010), Evelyn Hayes (1923-present), “William Henry “Billie” Hayes jr. (1924-1983), Sara Jane Hayes (1927-1983), Peter James Hayes (1929-1930) William Joseph “Joe” Hayes (1933-1989), Augustus Lee “Gus” Hayes (1936-2009)[8], Ignatius B Hayes(1938-1966), and Henry Hayes.
Sara married Charles S. Culver and had one son with him, Charles Culver. Sara moved to El Paso, TX in 1964 where she worked as a school nurse in the Tornillo school district. She was buried in Fort Bliss National Commentary in 1996.
William Joseph Hayes married Geraldine Ray (1934-2019) the two were high school sweethearts and married after college. Joe attended University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) while Geraldine attended University Southern until she married Joe. Joe served in the Marines as a 1st Lieutenant and worked at Ingalls shipyard in Pascagoula, MS after he returned home. After Joe’s death Geraldine created the Joseph Whelan Hayes and Geraldine Ray Hayes Scholarship Endowment at Ole Miss in his honor.
Gus was an employee of Entergy for 40 years and a cattleman and communicant at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Gus passed away at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, MS in 2009. He was buried in the Canton Cemetery.
Ignatius served in the National Guard before becoming a bookkeeper at the New Paragon Gin. He married Rita Bradshaw and they had 2 children together. A daughter named Teresa Gail Hayes and a son named Russel Hayes.
